Germany is seeing a change in its population. There are fewer young people and more older people. This situation is different in various regions. In Saxony, for example, the average age is higher than in many other German states. While most states have an average age of about 42 to 45 years, Saxony has an average age of 46.9 years.

One reason for this demographic change is that people are living longer. Thanks to better medical CARE, hygiene, and other factors, life expectancy has risen. For instance, the average life expectancy for newborn girls is currently 83.4 years, while for boys, it is 78.6 years. Life expectancy in Germany has more than doubled since record-keeping started. However, living longer does not mean better health. In fact, older adults often deal with multiple chronic illnesses at the same time. This means more people will likely need care in the future. In Saxony alone, more than 310,000 people required care in 2021, an increase of 23.9% compared to 2019.

The Role of Family Caregivers

Family caregivers are crucial to the care system in Germany. These individuals are usually family members or close friends who provide Support to those in need of care. In 2021, there were 4.96 million people requiring care in Germany. Among these, 4.17 million (or 84%) received care at home, while 790,000 (16%) stayed in care facilities. Of those cared for at home, 3.12 million were primarily supported by family members without any additional help from outside services.

This reliance on family caregivers is not only what many people prefer, but it also helps keep the healthcare and social systems running smoothly. However, family caregivers often face both physical and emotional challenges, which can lead to Stress and health issues of their own. Because of this, it is essential to understand who these caregivers are so that supportive measures can be created to help them.

Lack of Data in Saxony

Currently, there isn't enough reliable information about the Well-being of family caregivers in Saxony. The specific problems these caregivers face in different situations have not been thoroughly examined. This study aimed to find out how family caregivers feel when they take on caregiving responsibilities. By understanding their experiences, we can better identify the pressures they face and provide targeted support.

The study was based on a survey conducted in Saxony in 2019 to explore the home care situation. The survey took place over several months, and data were collected from various sources. Participants were chosen from registration offices, and they could fill out the survey either online or on paper.

Survey Methodology

The survey included a questionnaire with 68 questions, divided into five categories. It targeted both caregivers and non-caregivers. To assess caregiver well-being, the researchers used a tool called the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers. This scale helps to measure how stressed caregivers feel.

Before the main data collection, the questionnaire was tested for clarity and completeness. Potential participants received invitations to take part in the survey by mail, containing information about data protection. A hotline was set up for those who needed assistance filling out the survey. After the collection process, the researchers analyzed the data using statistical software to identify different groups among family caregivers.

Findings from the Survey

A total of 24,018 people were invited to participate, and 1,700 valid responses were collected. This represented a response rate of roughly 7.1%. Among those who completed the survey, the average age of caregivers ranged from 39 to 84 years. Most caregivers were married, and many reported that they cared for their in-laws. On average, caregivers had been helping their loved ones for several years.

After analyzing the data, two groups of caregivers were identified:

Group 1: Low Assistance and High Well-Being

This group made up 42.7% of the respondents. The average age of caregivers in this group was about 62 years. Most caregivers in this group were married, and they spent less time helping their loved ones-often less than ten hours a week. They reported relatively low levels of stress and were generally satisfied with their financial situations. Many in this group felt they had enough time for personal interests and felt in control of their lives.

Group 2: Intensive Assistance and Low Well-Being

The second group consisted of 57.3% of the respondents. The average age was around 58.9 years, with a higher proportion of women. Caregivers in this group participated in caregiving activities more intensively, often spending ten hours or more each week assisting their loved ones. Many indicated financial struggles, with most saying they just about managed to get by.

This group reported higher levels of stress and lower well-being. The majority in this group cared for individuals with both physical and mental health issues, leading to more complex caregiving tasks and stress.

The Importance of Support for Caregivers

The findings indicate that family caregivers in Saxony face a variety of challenges based on their circumstances. Caregivers who provide less assistance generally feel better and are in a more stable financial situation. In contrast, those who give more support often struggle with stress and their overall well-being.

Understanding these different caregiver experiences is essential for developing support systems that can help caregivers cope with their responsibilities. For instance, strategies to help caregivers manage their time or financial difficulties could improve their overall well-being.

Challenges That Caregivers Face

As caregiving responsibilities increase, caregivers often feel overwhelmed by the emotional and physical demands. Older caregivers, especially, may find it hard to handle these pressures, leading to health concerns of their own. Caregivers frequently report feeling isolated and unsupported, which can negatively impact their mental health.

Additionally, balancing work and caregiving can lead to further stress. Many caregivers must reduce their working hours or leave their jobs altogether to care for their loved ones. This creates financial strain and adds to their feelings of being overwhelmed.

The Need for Future Research

Since the survey was conducted in 2019, it is important to consider how recent events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and rising costs of living, may have impacted caregivers’ situations. Future studies should look into these changes and provide updated information on the challenges that caregivers face.

The study highlights that family caregivers are not a uniform group; they face different levels of stress depending on their circumstances. It is crucial for decision-makers, healthcare providers, and other support systems to recognize these differences when creating programs and services.

Conclusion

To effectively support family caregivers, it is essential to connect various levels of care and support in society. Collaboration among policymakers, healthcare providers, and community organizations can lead to better resources and services for caregivers. As the need for care continues to grow, understanding and supporting family caregivers will be vital in maintaining a healthy society.

Title: Characterization of groups of informal caregivers. A cluster analysis using the example of Saxony.

Abstract: BackgroundAs a result of demographic change, a further increase in the number of people in need of care in Germany can be expected in the future. Nursing activities performed by family members are a central component of care provision. The assumption of support services is increasingly associated with an additional physical and psychological burden on informal caregivers. The aim of this study is to identify and characterize groups of informal caregivers with regard to their well-being. MethodologyThe empirical study was based on a survey on home care in Saxony from 2019, which was intended as exploratory work to provide insights into the care situation in Saxony. The central component is a two-step cluster analysis with exclusively informal caregivers. ResultsThe net sample size for the cluster analysis comprised 178 subjects who were involved in caring for relatives. The cluster analysis revealed two groups of caregiving relatives in Saxony, which were differentiated by a different experience of stress and various sociodemographic factors. DiscussionInformal caregivers in Saxony are not a homogeneous group. Depending on various sociodemographic factors or the care effort and situation, they are confronted with different challenges in caring for relatives, which are directly reflected in their well-being. In order to achieve a targeted reduction in the burden on family caregivers, cooperation and constructive collaboration between political decision-makers, care and health insurers, and the various players in health and care provision is required.
